Pichwai paintings have a deep-rooted history that dates back to the 17th century. The word “Pichwai” comes from the Sanskrit words “pichh” meaning back and “wai” meaning textile hanging. These paintings were initially created to hang behind the idol of Shrinathji, a manifestation of Lord Krishna, in the temples of Nathdwara. The main purpose was to depict various moods and episodes from Lord Krishna’s life, particularly his childhood, and to celebrate different seasons and festivals
